"Izibongo" is the poetry improvised in the Ndebele, Swazi, Zulu or Xhosa languages to praise someone or something (praise poetry). The poet is known as an "Imbongi" and he recites rather than sings. It can be found in South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The Xhosa inbongis improvise a lot, whereas the Zulus use more memorized pieces. A description of the characteristics of each improvised custom is lacking.
